Biography

Heather Brewster was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan and raised in Grande Prairie until she graduated from high school in 1982. She received an art scholarship in grade 12 and moved to Calgary to attend Alberta College of Art.

After her foundation year, Brewster gained a sense of her scope of talent, but was discouraged by “the rules”, so she left college to pursue an office job and raising a family. She returned to her passion in 1999 after being introduced to The Point of Art (currently Artpoint) which is located in Inglewood. This art community taught her about honoring her talent and to except the title of “artist”.

Since then, Brewster has had many solo exhibitions and her work is constantly evolving.
She flirts between large and small pieces, including her signature work “Palette Paintings”, which are made from recycled palettes of dried paint.

Currently residing in Calgary, she is represented by several local galleries and is a member of the Night of Artists.

Artist Statement

My dream as an artist is to crack open the capsule of my colorful imagination and have it spill out before me in all of its effervescent splendor and touch it with my own hands.
I consider myself an intuitive artist, self-taught in many areas. I like to experiment with different mediums, colors, textures, hidden images, interlocking patterns and perspective. I am drawn to chaos and like to make a masterful mess and then make some sense of it. One of my favorite things to do is mix products together to see what will happen, or applying layers and scraping off layers to see what shows up. Experimenting allows the painting to take on a life of its own and shift many times from the original intention. Sometimes there are many layers and the chaos can go on forever, but my paintings will often indicate when they are complete by presenting a message and /or revealing the title of the piece.

Currently I am exploring homemade “Scratchboard”, which involves scratching an image into a thin layer of paint on a panel or canvas. It is a subtractive process where the image is waiting beneath the surface to be revealed.

I am grateful for the connection with others that my artwork provides and the outlet to share some of my personal struggles and spiritual messages.
